Ice Hockey Is Coming To Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore City leaders announced the Washington Capitals will host a game at 1st Mariner Arena.

Kai Jackson reports the big announcement comes as some say the arena needs to be replaced.

An NHL event may not bring hockey back to Baltimore or save the 1st Mariner Arena, but fans of the game think on both counts, it's a good start.

There was big news in Baltimore on Monday and it meant a lot at the Stackhouse  Bar in Canton.  Signs outside the door on Hudson Street alert patrons that while the O's and Ravens are popular, they also like their Caps.

"Hockey's...great for business," said Stackhouse Bar owner Dominic DeSantis.

That's why people are so happy about the Washington Capitals coming to Baltimore this year.

"I'm excited," said Alan Viars.

The Greater Baltimore Committee has recommended that a new arena be constructed in the city.  In 2008, the estimated cost was $300 million.

The Capitals will take on the Nashville Predators in September's pre-season matchup.
