Teen Escapes From Md. Detention Facility

LAUREL, Md. (AP) -- D.C. officials say a youth has escaped from a juvenile detention facility in Maryland after attacking a guard.

Police say the 17-year-old from southeast Washington escaped from the New Beginnings Youth Development Center in Laurel on Monday. Officials say the teen stole the guard's keys, climbed a fence and used a nearby ladder to escape the facility in the guard's car.

By late Monday D.C. police had located the car, but not the youth.

This is the third escape from the center since it opened in 2009. The $46 million campus was hailed as a model for youth detention and a place to rehabilitate young criminals. The  center is in Anne Arundel County, but is run by the District.
