Md. Delegate Seeks Immigrant Tuition Referendum

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A state delegate is trying to force a referendum on whether Maryland should allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition.

Washington County Republican Neil Parrott said Wednesday that the measure recently approved by the General Assembly would make legal residents subsidize the education of illegal immigrants.

Parrott says he has taken the first step toward a petition drive in hopes of overturning the legislation through a statewide public vote.

A spokesman for Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley says O'Malley plans to sign the tuition bill into law.
