'West Side Story' Is Back With An Updated Theme

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Time is running out to see the popular "West Side Story" playing at the Hippodrome.

Andrea Fujii explains how the cast has updated the 54-year-old show.

It sounds like the timeless classic, but this "West Side Story" -- complete with the rivalry between the Jets and Sharks -- has a more contemporary feel.

"Twelve percent of the show is now in Spanish to lend more realism to the Sharks. The whole show has a more realistic tone," said Drew Foster, cast member.

The musical adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" set in New York City first debuted in 1957. Choreographers for this 2011 Broadway version wanted to give it an update.

Cast members started practicing the edgier dance moves in August, three months before going on tour.

"Lots of people go to the gym, lots of people work out, but the show itself is a workout into itself," said Foster.

Cast members say the show's heart and soul hasn't changed and hope you'll come and see it.

"West Side Story" runs through April 24. Tickets range in price from $22 to $77.
