Baltimore May Honor Schaefer With Day Of Service

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The president of Baltimore's City Council is calling for an annual day of service in honor of former Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer, who died last week.

City Council President Bernard C. Young is planning to introduce a resolution calling for Schaefer's birthday, Nov. 2, to become a citywide day of service.

Young says the resolution calling for "Do it Now" Day in Baltimore will be introduced May 2, during the council's next regularly scheduled meeting. Schaefer was Baltimore's mayor from 1971 to 1986. He served two terms as governor starting in 1987.
