Feds, Locals To Take Back Old Prescription Drugs

McLEAN, Va. (AP) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration wants to help people clean up their medicine cabinets.

The DEA is partnering with state and local agencies to sponsor a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. People can take unwanted and expired prescription drugs to designated drop-off sites.

Experts say the home medicine cabinet is a leading source for drug abuse. Drug disposal can be complicated, since flushing many drugs is a no-no and throwing them in the trash without proper precautions is discouraged.

A similar event last year collected more than 120 tons of prescription drugs nationwide.

The District of Columbia is sponsoring 13 drop-off sites.

Maryland is sponsoring 81, and 20 will be located in northern Virginia. Exact locations can be found at www.dea.gov.
