Herald-Mail Publisher To Retire In July

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The editor and publisher of The Herald-Mail in Hagerstown says he will retire in July.

John League, who has held the post of editor and publisher since 1995 and has been with the company for 32 years, announced his plans Monday during meetings with staff.

League, 56, started at the Herald-Mail in 1979 as a reporter in the bureau in Charles Town, W.Va. He was named city editor of The Morning Herald in 1985, then managing editor later that year. The Herald-Mail Co. published The Morning Herald and The Daily Mail, an afternoon paper, as well as combined Saturday and Sunday editions.

The three versions of the paper merged into one -- The Herald-Mail -- in 2007.

The paper is owned by Indiana-based Schurz Communications Inc.  The company plans to have a replacement ready when League leaves.
