HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Hagerstown Regional Airport is expanding its passenger space inside the terminal in preparation for the arrival of a new carrier with bigger jets.

The Washington County Commissioners approved a $200,000 expenditure for terminal modifications Tuesday, matched by $200,000 in federal funds.

The airport will convert a conference room to passenger holding space to increase the terminal’s capacity to 150 passengers from 100.

The move comes as Direct Air prepares to start service June 23 to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Florida with 150-seat planes. The airport’s only other commercial carrier, Cape Air, uses smaller aircraft on flights between Hagerstown and Baltimore.

Airport Director Phil Ridenour says the airport also will add an automated baggage-conveyer system.

He says longer-range plans call for construction of another 2,100 square feet of terminal space.

$400k wouldn’t build a s….t house in an airport or a hot dog stand. Once you had to hire union workers & strict guidelines for minorities, you would have to get an extension & more money from the Federal government.
