Man, 71, Honored For Saving Boy From Drowning

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A 71-year-old New Market man is being honored as a hero for jumping into a creek to save a boy from drowning.

Jack Severn received a Heroism Medal from the Marine Corps League at the Maryland chapter's annual convention Saturday in Ocean City.

Severn says he was visiting Baker Park in Frederick with his wife and granddaughter last month when a boy aged 7 or 8 fell into Carroll Creek.

He says the boy was in trouble so he jumped into the shoulder-deep water and swam across a strong current to bring him to safety.

Severn says his wife told the Marine Corps League about the incident.

Severn is a member of the veterans organization, which helps wounded Marines and promotes Marine Corps ideals.
