Some Metro Workers Logging Major Overtime

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Some Metro employees are logging so much overtime that they are essentially working a second full-time job.

The Washington Examiner reports that a Metro construction inspector logged more than 550 hours of overtime during the first two months of the year. That's the equivalent of working 16 hours every day. The inspector earned more than $32,000 in extra pay.

At least nine other workers also logged 40 or more overtime hours per week in January and February. Most of them earned more than $16,000 in extra pay. The Washington Examiner obtained the information through a public information request.

Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says the transit system is in the middle of a major capital improvement program and that staffing shortfalls lead to long days and extra cash for some workers.
