O'Malley Restores Funding To Scholarship Fund

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Gov. Martin O'Malley has restored funding to Maryland's Distinguished Scholars fund, which had been canceled due to budget cuts.

O'Malley said in a statement Wednesday that he has ordered the Maryland Higher Education Commission to restore funding to 350 Maryland seniors who were counting on the $3,000 award to attend a Maryland college or university.

O'Malley says that while this year's budget deficit presented unique challenges, it was never the administration's intention to impact prior awards.

Seniors learned of the scholarship award in the fall, and most had to decide where they would attend college by the end of April.

But the education commission did not begin sending letters about the scholarship cuts until the end of last week.
