Postal Workers Challenge Md. Consolidation Plan

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Some postal workers in Frederick are challenging a U.S. Postal Service proposal to move local mail-processing operations to Baltimore.

Members of the American Postal Workers Union spoke at a public meeting that the postal service held Tuesday night in Frederick.

The workers say the proposal doesn't explain how moving about 185 jobs from Frederick to other locations would save the postal service a projected $4.2 million a year.

They say the study is flawed because it doesn't account for the recent sharp increase in gasoline prices.

The postal service says the proposal hasn't been approved yet.

The agency is accepting public comments on the plan through May 25.
