$600M Plan Would Modernize Baltimore Court Campus

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A $600 million plan to modernize Baltimore's circuit court campus would renovate the city's courthouses and build a new one.

A feasibility study for the project that could take six to eight years was presented Wednesday to members of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

It recommends a parcel north of Courthouse East for a new courthouse to house criminal proceedings. The 111-year-old Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. Courthouse would be restored for juvenile and family courts. Courthouse East would be renovated for civil proceedings, Orphans Court, Register of Wills and jury assembly, with 70,000 square feet which could be rented out or used for the district court's civil division.

Administrative Judge Marcella Holland says officials now must figure out how to implement and pay for the plan.
