Md. Half Marathon Proceeds Go To Cancer Research

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Hundreds of runners will lace up their shoes in Howard County on Sunday, and it's all for a good cause.

Ron Matz reports thanks to the efforts of two guys from Baltimore, the Maryland Half Marathon has become one of the biggest races on the East Coast.

Nearly 2,000 runners are expected for Sunday's Maryland Half Marathon. All the proceeds from the race will benefit the University of Maryland's Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.

"My mom and dad have really given back to the community in many areas. In Baltimore they're really known for the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center. This cancer center is now ranked number 21 out of 930 cancer centers in the country. This is an NCI designated cancer institute, it's really top-notch," said Michael Greenebaum, Maryland Half Marathon founder. "It's been very successful. We've raised close to a half million dollars already. This year we'll raise over a quarter of a million, so $750,000 in three years, that's a lot of money. It's money that's well needed for the work and the recruitment of top-notch researchers and doctors at the cancer center."

The Maryland Half Marathon will be held at the Maple Lawn Community in Howard County this year.

"This year we're at a new location in Howard County. We're able to pull people from D.C., as well as Baltimore. We're seeing a record year in our numbers and a record year in our fundraising, which is the most important reason we do this every year," said Jon Sevel, Maryland Half Marathon co-chair. "It's pretty humbling. We've put together our passions for running and our passions for fundraising and giving back to the community and this is what we've come up with. We're very proud of what we do."

Every year the race gets bigger and helping more and more people.

"Over 2,000 runners have already registered. Registration is still open. Runners can still get out there. Come on out and help support a great cause," said Greenebaum.

WJZ is a proud sponsor of the Maryland Half Marathon as part of our Continuing Community Commitment.
