BLOG: The Storm Moves Our Way

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The incredible stretch of beautiful days and dry weather has temporarily come to an end. The same storm that was continually spinning over the middle of the country has slowly moved our way. Now that it's here, it will continue to slowly spin but right over us. Even though there will be some differences from day-to-day, the scattered showers and thunderstorms around going to stick around until it starts moving again.

There is a huge low in the upper-levels of the atmosphere that has been cut off from the jetstream. Since there is nothing to push it along, that's why it sat over the middle of the country for nearly a week. Now that it has drifted our way, there is still no connection with the jetstream. Looking ahead, we don't think that this large upper-level low is going anywhere for most of the week. With that low around, it will continue to produce rounds of rain and thunderstorms. The radar will differ somewhat each day, but the stormy weather is going to stick around.

The clouds started coming yesterday and haven't gone much of anywhere with the winds still out of the southeast. We did not get out of the 60s with those clouds around. Where the clouds did break in western Maryland, temperatures rose to the 70s and just off to our south in Virginia, temperatures jumped into the 80s. Also, some strong thunderstorms have developed where it did warm up in Virginia. Even though they won't be as strong when they get here, they are moving our way tonight. This round of thunderstorms and rain will wind down overnight. However, with the main storm not going anywhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue again tomorrow - and all the way until at least Wednesday.

There is a sign that the storm could start to weaken and lift away late in the week. But with such a stubborn storm, we are going to have to watch it the next few days to make sure that trend continues. And yes, we know that it's a big weekend coming up with all the Preakness festivities, so we will keep you updated.

 ATTENTION TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:

There is still time! Our fourth annual Weather Field Trip Day at Camden Yards is right around the corner. This year, it will be Thursday, May 26. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it's a day full of fun. We start out with an action, graphics-filled weather program on the field that features helpers like Nicole Sherry (head groundskeeper), Chris Strong from the National Weather Service and, of course, the Bird. Then, everyone takes a lunch break before enjoying an afternoon Orioles game.
