Superfresh Plans To Sell Nearly All Md. Stores

BALTIMORE (AP) -- State officials say Superfresh is warning of hundreds of layoffs if the grocer cannot sell nearly all of its stores in Maryland and they have to close.

Officials said Monday that Superfresh wants to sell 22 of its 24 stores in Maryland. Two stores in Ocean City are not for sale.

Superfresh says the closings could start as soon as July 6. If buyers can't be found, nearly 1,500 employees could be laid off.

Sixteen of the stores are in the Baltimore area.

Superfresh's parent company is the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., based in New Jersey.
