Smithsonian Offers Buyouts Amid Budget Pressures

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Smithsonian Institution is offering buyouts to its federal employees for the second time in two years amid federal budget constraints.

Spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas said Tuesday that budget pressures led to the buyout offer. The museum complex will offer lump-sum payments capped at $25,000 to those who voluntarily resign or retire. They must decide by July 22.

Secretary Wayne Clough announced the buyouts and early retirement offer in a memo to staff. He wrote that it will help reshape the workforce to meet current and future programming needs under a new strategic plan.

In 2009, 144 federal employees took a buyout from about 4,000 federal staffers.

The National Zoo has announced seven employees will be laid off, saying federal funds haven’t kept up with rising costs for animal care.

CUT THE SALARIES OF THOSE LOSERS THAT WORK ON CAPITOL HILL TO PAY FOR THESE WORKERS………………THE MUSEUMS AND THE ZOO ARE MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THOSE ELECTED DO-LITTLES AND THEIR STAFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. PAUL E. MICELLI says:

ALL ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES SHOULD HAVE THEIR SALARIES AND THE REST OF THE FREEBIES BY 75%. REPRESENTING THE PEOPLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN HONOR AND PRIVLEDGE, NOT A FREE RIDE AT TAXPAYERS EXPENSE.

Eleven years ago, I was rcenperatiug from an operation. During this time, I listened over and over again to Eric Clapton Unplugged. Something about his voice and the slow music moved me and helped heal me. Before that, I can remember listening to my cassette tape of Graceland by Paul Simon over and over again. I loved that tape. I don’t know why I didn’t get it in CD. The next time I go shopping someplace that sells music, I’m going to see if it’s available and buy it.
