Ceremony Honors 4 Fallen Md. Police Officers

SYKESVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A Baltimore police officer who was allegedly shot to death by fellow officers is being honored by state officials.

The wreath-laying ceremony Friday in Sykesville memorializes Officer William Torbit Jr. and three other Maryland police officers killed in the past year.

Public Safety Secretary Gary Maynard and State Police Superintendent Terrence Sheridan are leading the tribute.

The Baltimore Police Department says Torbit was on duty Jan. 9 in plainclothes when he tried to break up a fight at a nightclub.

Investigators say he drew his weapon to defend himself and other officers killed him.

The tribute also honors Maryland State Police Trooper Wesley Brown, who was fatally shot outside a Prince George's County restaurant, and Baltimore police officers James Fowler and Thomas Portz, who died in car crashes.
