Orioles' Wives Help Renovate Habitat Home In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Oriole players' wives skipped the bats and picked up sledgehammers instead. They renovated a Baltimore home for Habitat for Humanity.
Andrea Fujii was there as they hit it out of the ballpark for one lucky family.
These ladies know how to swing.
Thirteen Orioles' wives participated in the Chesapeake's Habitat for Humanity Women Build Project. All females are building a home for a Baltimore mother.
"Women can help build a house just as well as men. I think they're excited by the challenge," said Diane Cookson, Habitat for Humanity.
O's manager Buck Showalter's wife is happy to do some dirty work.
"Home life is such an important structure to have, and the fact that you can be a part of that and help somebody else have a wonderful home," said Angela Showalter, Buck Showalter's wife.
Sequoia Gaylord is the lucky new homeowner.
"I'll be able to be more stable and have a better place to live," said Gaylord.
This is the 10th Women Build House and it's not a one-day project. The women will be working on it for the next six months.
Orioles' catcher Jake Fox's wife Ali welcomes the manual labor.
"We're excited to do the demolition and maybe take out some aggression today, too," said Ali Fox, Jake Fox's wife.
Across the country, female volunteers have built more than 1,800 homes, scoring a home run for women.
