Prince George's County Putting More Officers In 5 Areas

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County police are beginning a summer crime initiative that will put more patrol officers in areas that have seen the most violence.

The effort began Sunday and runs through Sept. 5. The officers are being assigned to Langley Park, Riverdale, Suitland, Hillcrest Heights and Glassmanor. Authorities say those communities have had the most murders, non-fatal shootings, carjackings and robberies.

Gang and drug investigators will work cases specifically in those five areas.

The county has had 46 homicides this year. At this time last year, the county had 34 homicides.
