Bidders Interested In Superfresh Stores In Md.
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Rival supermarket chains are placing bids on a dozen Superfresh stores poised to go out of business.
Superfresh's parent, A&P, filed for bankruptcy last year and is trying to sell 25 Superfresh stores to pay off debt. Most of the stores are in the Baltimore area.
A joint venture between Village Super Market Inc. and Mrs. Green's Management Court has agreed to buy 10 of the stores and convert two -- one in White Oak, the other in Lutherville-Timonium -- into ShopRite stores. SuperValu has also expressed interest in turning the Superfresh store in Ellicott City into a Shoppers Food & Pharmacy. The Baltimore Sun reports that the landlord of the store in Westminster is trying to buy that location.
A hearing before a bankruptcy judge is expected June 14.
