Woman Pleads Guilty In Money Laundering Conspiracy

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A 25-year old Elkton woman has pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder more than $400,000 in drug money by buying casinos chips, winning lottery tickets, luxury items and real estate.

Joy Edison entered the plea Thursday in U.S. District Court and agreed to forfeit her interest in eight properties.

An indictment returned last month charged Edison and Steven Blackwell, both of Elkton, with conspiring to distribute heroin, launder money and defraud the U.S. government and sought forfeiture of $10 million.

Sentencing for Edison is set for Aug. 12.

A trial for Blackwell, described by police a drug kingpin, is set for June 6. Police say he set off a year of violence in Baltimore that culminated in a shootout at a 2009 barbecue that injured a dozen people.
