Roland Park Bakery And Deli Has A New Home In Hampden

BALTIMORE  (WJZ) -- For more than a quarter of a century it was a place where friends and neighbors met in North Baltimore, but changes to the Roland Park Shopping Center led to its moving.

Now, as Ron Matz reports, the beloved Roland Park Bakery and Deli has re-opened, in a new neighborhood.

Hampden is now home for the Roland Park Bakery and Deli. Old friends are happy to find it at 35th and Chestnut Street.

"We're now coming down here. It's great, it's very nice and bright. It's wonderful to see her being successful. It's the same old crew, so it still feels like home," said Bruce Taylor, Roland Park customer.

For 27 years, home was the Roland Park Shopping Center. Owner Anita Ward is thrilled to be in her new location.

"I love it. It's here in Hampden. We're at the corner of 35th and Chestnut. We're about a mile and a half from the old location, so it's not far," said Ward. "Some people have a concern about parking, but there isn't a problem. Everybody goes to work, so there's plenty of parking on 35th Street and on Chestnut, so it's simple."

There are baked goods galore, including bagels and cupcakes.

"She's in a different place. She'll get a different set of customers plus a lot of the people she had before. I think she'll be fine," said John Voneiff, customer.

The old store sign has been brought over along with some other items from the original Roland Park location. There's the old menu board, the bakery case and the apron customers signed on her 25th anniversary.

"It's a lovely place. She makes wonderful baked goods. It's not just a deli. It's really a place to come and get buns and other types of baked goods which are really superior," said Voneiff.

They are off to a new beginning.

"It makes me feel very wanted and very loved. The response when people come in is hugs and kisses and it just makes me feel good," said Ward. "I like where I am. I think this was a good choice. It's not a far move so I won't lose that many people. This is an upcoming neighborhood and there are just so many people here."

Ward says she eventually hopes to provide outdoor seating as well.

The Roland Park Bakery and Deli is open every day but Sunday.
