D.C. Residents Warned Not To Open Fire Hydrants

WASHINGTON (AP) — Forecasters say Memorial Day could mark the start of the region’s first heat wave of the year and District of Columbia authorities are reminding Washington residents not to open fire hydrants.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory starting at noon on Memorial Day and running through Tuesday evening for areas including central and southern Maryland and northern Virginia. Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 90s on Monday and could reach the upper 90s on Tuesday. High humidity is expected to make it feel even hotter.

Officials say unauthorized use of fire hydrants can affect firefighting, damage the water system and hurt people.

Tampering with a hydrant is a crime, subject to a $100 fine. To report unauthorized use of fire hydrants, call 911.
