ACCIDENT, Md. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski is sharing ideas for improving rural education during a visit to far western Maryland.
The Maryland Democrat meets Wednesday in Accident with Garrett County educators, parents and students. The visit follows a similar meeting Tuesday in Allegany County.
Mikulski sits on the Senate Rural Education Caucus. She also chairs a subcommittee that she says will play a major role in rewriting the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Mikulski says a recent government report found rural districts more likely to lack libraries and museums, and less able to offer competitive teacher salaries. She’s advocating greater flexibility in directing federal funds to the school districts that need the money the most. She wants to create an office for rural issues within the Education Department.
