Investigators Find Human Remains At Md. Fire Site

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says investigators have discovered human remains among the ruins of a fire last month in Hagerstown.

The office said in a release that investigators from the fire marshal's office and an insurance company were removing debris from the scene on Fairview Road when they found the remains about noon Tuesday.

The office said the remains were taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the identity of the person and the cause of death.

Maugansville Fire Chief William Garrett said that the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the evening of May 27. He said firefighters thought someone was inside the burning house, but later learned the person who lived there wasn't home at the time.
