Officials: Md. Teen Is 1 Class Shy Of Graduating

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) -- A judge has denied a request to let an Oxon Hill senior walk with her class Thursday in a graduation ceremony because she is an English class shy of completing the requirements for Prince George's County high schools.

The Washington Examiner reports that the family of Shavonte Petty, 18, made the court request while their appeal of the original ruling by Superintendent William Hite is sorted out by the Maryland education department.

Petty argued that she couldn't complete the course because Oxon Hill High School faculty did not provide her with the disability assistance she needed when she was out of school sick. She suffers from severe allergies, asthma and anemia.

But Circuit Court Judge Sean Wallace said Wednesday there wasn't enough evidence to suggest that her appeal would succeed.
