South River Beach Closed Due To Bacteria

RIVA, Md. (AP) --  Anne Arundel County health officials say they have closed a beach on the South River due to high bacterial levels.

The county health department issued an advisory on Monday warning residents to avoid swimming, water skiing and other direct water contact at Glen Isle in Riva. The department says high bacteria levels were found in water samples collected on June 7 and June 9.

The department says the advisory will remain in effect until water samples show acceptable bacteria levels for at least two consecutive days. People who have come in contact with the affected water should immediately wash with soap and warm water and wash their clothing as well.

Health officials say many factors can lead to high bacteria levels, including waterfowl, rainfall, water temperature and tidal action.
