Archaeology Display Highlights Washington County
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Tourism and archaeology come together in Hagerstown in an exhibit of artifacts from three digs in Washington County.
The display opens Wednesday at the downtown Convention and Visitors' Bureau.
It showcases items from a 19-century plantation near Cearfoss; a 2,000-year-old Native American tool-making site near Mount Aetna; and French and Indian War military activities at Fort Frederick.
The artifacts belong to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. The state agency got a nearly $28,000 federal grant last year to create pilot displays for Washington and St. Mary's counties. It plans to create similar displays for other jurisdictions.
The Washington County artifacts will be on view for 12 months at four different venues.
The St. Mary's County exhibit has been on display since February at the Lexington Park Library.
