Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Coming To Harborplace

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Just days after Phillips Seafood announced it is leaving Harborplace, there's something new to take its place.

Jessica Kartalija has more.

Shrimp are taking over. Literally.

"We've got deli, we have cheesecake and now we've got more shrimp," said an Inner Harbor patron.

Phillips Seafood announced they are closing up shop at the Light Street Pavilion. In its place: Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, of "Forest Gump" fame.

The restaurant features film memorabilia, photographs and reproductions of scripts, storyboards and costumes. There is also a retail store within the restaurant that sells souvenirs and clothing.

Laurie Schwartz is executive director of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore.

"It's good news that someone is going in that spot and someone signed so quickly," Schwartz said. "It shows there's a real market and demand for space here at the Harbor, and that's a good sign."

Not to worry, Phillips will still be around.  They're expected to reopen at the site of the old ESPN Zone, according to WJZ's media partner, the Baltimore Sun.

"They are continuing to aggressively make sure that Harborplace remains a top quality destination for tourists and for residents," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

The chain touts its ability to make the shrimpossible, possible. They are confident the restaurant will have a jumbo shrimp impact on Charm City.

Lenny's and H&M clothing store just opened at the Harbor, and It's Sugar is planning to open this summer.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. will offer a sit-down restaurant and a fast-casual option. The restaurant plans to open by May 2012.
