Ship's Engineer Sentenced In Oil Dumping Case
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chief engineer of a Liberian-operated cargo ship has been sentenced to six months in prison for
obstructing an inspection of the craft at the Port of Baltimore.
Dimitrios Grifakis, 57, of Kallithea, Greece was also ordered to undergo two years of supervised release.
According to Grifakis' guilty plea, a clergy member visiting the M/V Capitola at the Port of Baltimore was told by a crew member of the dumping of waste oil overboard.
The Coast Guard inspected the Capitola, and during the investigation, Grifakis falsely denied ordering anyone to pump oily waste overboard.
