Correctional Officer Reports Being Sexually Assaulted By An Inmate

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A correctional officer at the Baltimore City Detention Center reported being sexually assaulted by an inmate this past weekend.

Adam May has more.

The Internal Investigative Unit of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is handling the investigation, and an inmate is being questioned as a person of interest.

The Division of Pretrial Detention and Services, which oversees the Baltimore City Detention Center and the Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Facility, is working with the investigative unit trying to determine facts through interviews and collection of evidence.

Staff has been offered counseling, and the investigation continues. In addition to any criminal investigation, DPSCS also conducts an administrate investigation into all serious incidents to determine if all policies and procedures were properly followed.

Over the past four years no sexual assaults on staff by inmates have been reported at the Baltimore City Detention Center or Central Booking.

Last year, two correction officers were involved in serious physical assaults that required hospitalization.
