Grants Aim To Make Juvenile Justice More Equitable

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration has announced about $580,000 in federal grants to reduce the amount of minorities who are disproportionately caught up in the state's juvenile justice system.

The governor's office of crime control and prevention on Tuesday announced the grants aimed at reducing disproportionate minority contact. That occurs when a racial or ethnic group's representation at any point in the criminal justice system exceeds its representation in the general population.

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services will receive about $133,000 to pay for supervised activities as an alternative to secure detention. Baltimore will get nearly $119,000 to assist in transition youths to communities.

Anne Arundel County will receive nearly $71,000 to focus on where that is occurring and to work with law enforcement and schools to address it.
