BALTIMORE (WJZ) – In just about three months, Baltimore City streets will turn into a giant race course.  But in the meantime, traffic is slow-going as construction continues.  Jessica Kartalija explains drivers are being told to avoid downtown if possible.

Signs, signs and more signs.

“It’s horrific,” said one driver.

With just three months until the Baltimore Grand Prix, drivers deal with more closures for construction.

“We are closing Charles Street between Conway and Pratt.  It’s going to be for a week or two,” said Frank Murphy, Department of Transportation.

In order to repair giant slabs of concrete, transportation officials have closed two lanes along Pratt between Hopkins Place and Calvert Street.

“Traffic is horrendous.  It’s crazy! It sometimes takes an hour to get from Pier Five to Fells Point,” said a driver.

The construction isn’t just a headache for drivers.  Commuters say trying to park on the street is nearly impossible.

“Because they have closed some of the streets, there’s no on-street parking access, so it’s been very, very difficult.  I can’t run as many service calls,” said one.

Cab drivers say the construction is killing business.

“Before you turn, you have to go around and around before you can turn.  Construction blocks it.  Six lanes turn to one.  It’s just not fair,” said Toks Ogunlale.

Transportation officials say the repairs are crucial as the racecars will navigate city streets at speeds over 180 miles per hour.

“It’s going to be worth it in the long run, if it brings money to Baltimore,” said a driver.

The Baltimore Grand Prix will take place over Labor Day weekend, September 2-4.

“Transportation officials say drivers should find alternate routes in the meantime.”
The transportation officials need to realize that if they continue to make life miserable for the people that work in the city, they will lose the businesses that pay the taxes that ultimately pay their over-reaching salaries.
The powers that be in the city obviously have no clue!!!! They are causing headaches for the citizens of Baltimore in order to have a race for one weekend thinking that they are going to make all kinds of money

    IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!

Thank the democrats there. You people keep electing them.

  • whatnow

And it is going to get worse the closer it gets to Labor Day. They are even going to be shutting down the light rail at Raven’s stadium coming from the south. They will say they will have a bus bridge but they have said this before. The buses are never there.

THEY ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATING THE ECONOMIC IMPACT THIS RACE WILL HAVE ON THE CITY…………………..THEY WON’T FIX ANYTHING FOR THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE HERE, BUT THEY’LL FIX THE ROADS FOR A RACE……………..GENIUS!!!!!

The mayor lost my vote for this dumb idea for 1 weekend. This money is not lowering my property tax, my bge bill or my water bills. IDIOTS

    Just between you and me…

If even one of these racers tries to “navigate the streets of Baltimore at 180mph”, there will be loss of life and property damage.

Native Baltimorians set speed records every day during rush hour, but none come close to the 180mph mark.

ANOTHER WASTE OF THE TAXPAYERS MONIES. YOU WANT TO SEE A CAR RACE GO TO THE RACE TRACK. THE STREETS OF BALTIMORE ARE PAID FOR BY THE CITIZENS AND SHOULD BE LEFT TO THAT, THE CITIZENS SHOULD BE THE ONE’S USING ROADS IN THE CITY. HOW MUCH MONEY ARE THE TAZPAYERS GOING TO REAP FROM THIS?? TOLL RATES RISING AND STREETS BEING USED DON’T ADD UP TO A FAIR SHAKE FOR THE CITIZENS. REMEMBER ELECTION AND THE TOWN HALL MEETINGS, THIS IS A GOOD SUBJECT FOR DISCUSSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BY THE WAY WHO COMES UP WITH THESE “BRIGHT IDEAS”?

  • Stop Yelling

When you comment in all-caps, readers perceive you as yelling.
If you have a valid and intelligent point, yelling is not required.
