Sheriff Becomes Carroll Co.'s Primary Enforcer

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- The Carroll County Sheriff's Office is preparing to take the lead in law enforcement in the county.

The sheriff's office is making the transition Friday to being the county's primary law enforcement agency, taking over duties that have been performed by state police.

Under an agreement signed earlier this year, the sheriff's office will also be responsible for registered sex offender monitoring, licensing of secondhand precious metal objects dealers and pawnbrokers and the Regional Automated Property Information Database.

Maryland State Police will move the 45 troopers assigned to county in the resident troopers program to other duties around the state over the next three years. Troopers will still respond to incidents on state and federal highways in the county.
