Some 47,000 Marylanders Expected To Travel This Weekend

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Traveling for the Fourth of July. Hundreds of thousands of Marylanders are getting out of town this weekend but not as many as last year.

Andrea Fujii has the story.

AAA mid-Atlantic expects 652, 000 Marylanders to drive to their holiday destinations. Down 4 percent from last year.

"It is the gas prices.  They was going down and then they just stopped."

An average gallon of unleaded in Maryland is at $3.55. One year ago it was $2.75.

AAA admits their survey may not be completely accurate now. It was done at the end of May when gas prices were about 40 cents higher.

Although those projections indicate a decline, we could in fact see that decline not to be as high as previously expected," said Ragina Averella, AAA mid-Atlantic.

More positive news: 60,000 Marylanders are expected to fly this weekend. Up 20 percent.

High gas prices weren't going to stop Constance Correlli as she fills up for Ocean City.

"We were going to go no matter what, but we're happy they went down," said Correlli, driver.

Though many Marylanders are choosing to stay put ...

"Just hanging out on the house, do a little cookout, that's it," said one motorist.

"We sleep, eat," said antoher.

AAA still expects it to be a busy one.

"This is still probably the fourth highest Fourth of July travel holiday that we've seen over the last 10 years," Averella said.

Some 47,000 Marylanders are also expected to take the bus, train, or boat when they head out for this July 4.
