Md. Detention Center Fills With Foul Smell

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- About 300 inmates had to be evacuated from the Wicomico County Detention Center after an apparent gas water heater failed and filled the facility with carbon monoxide gases.

County public information officer Jim Fineran says about 300 prisoners were evacuated at about 8 p.m. Friday. He says one officer and four inmates were taken to a medical center.

WBOC reports that officials are evaluating the damage to the gas hot water boiler.
