OAKLAND, Md. (AP) — An Annapolis woman has been sentenced to 18 months of home confinement for the manslaughter of her newborn son.

Jamie Lynn Hiemenz, 29, was convicted and sentenced after entering an Alford plea Tuesday in Garrett County Circuit Court. In an Alford plea, the defendant doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors have enough evidence for a conviction.

State’s Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch says Hiemenz gave birth at a friend’s town house near Deep Creek Lake in September 2009. Welch says the baby asphyxiated after inhaling amniotic fluid. She says he died because Hiemenz took no action to save him.

Hiemenz will be on supervised probation for another 18 months after her home confinement ends.

She also must continue mental-health treatment and pay court costs of $1,100.
