911 Tapes Released From Police Officer's Fall Off 83 Bridge

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Panic, fear and concern.  For the first time, we are hearing dramatic police scanner audio from the day a city officer was hit by a car and fell off Interstate 83.

Kai Jackson has those tapes.

Officer Teresa Rigby faced life-threatening injuries  after a  frightening fall on the job.  The 911 tapes of that incident show the determination to help the injured officer.

Baltimore City police officer Teresa Rigby, 27, was working an accident on the northbound JFX June 21.  It's a dangerous stretch of highway that nearly proved deadly for Rigby, who's been on the force for three and a half years.

"She was arousable but not awake," said Dr. Thomas Scalea, Shock Trauma doctor.

Police say the driver of a car lost control and hit Rigby's cruiser, which was parked behind the disabled vehicle Rigby was helping.  That vehicle knocked her over the jersey wall and sent her plummeting 25 feet below to the pavement.

"Somebody go down and check to see if she fell over," the tape said.

Police have now released the calls to 911 after the accident.

"They're telling me that she may have went over the bridge," a call said.

After a brief search, officers found their injured comrade.

"Okay, she's at the Pepsi plant.  You've got to go through the gate; she's laying down there," a call said.

Rigby was rushed to Shock Trauma.  Initially she was in critical condition and suffered severe injuries to her face, leg and pelvis.

Rigby is out of the hospital and being treated at a rehabilitation center.
