Ash Borer Beetle Causes Most Of Maryland To Be Quarantined

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- All of Maryland west of the Chesapeake has been placed under a quarantine.

This follows the discovery of emerald ash borer beetles in Allegany and Anne Arundel counties.  The highly destructive insect is native to Asia and was first found in Prince George's County in 2003.  To stop it, tens of thousands of ash trees were destroyed.

When that didn't work, a quarantine was imposed on three counties.  Now it's in force for most of the rest of the state, making it illegal to move firewood or any hard wood out of the quarantined area.
