Hopkins Tops Hospital Honor Roll

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Johns Hopkins Hospital is again at the top of the class.  The facility was named the number one hospital by U.S. News and World Report for the 21st year in a row.

Meghan McCorkell has more on why this winning streak continues.

The banners are out touting Johns Hopkins' latest win.  It's the number one hospital in the country again.

"I get the best peace of mind knowing that she's in the best hands," said Carol Schaar.

Schaar and Deb Graham drove from Harrisburg to bring their mom to Hopkins for surgery.

"They've got the best doctors for her condition, it seems," said Graham.

It's that added patient care that's earned the hospital a number one spot since 1991, says hospital spokesman Gary Stephenson.

"We say we are a patient-centered institution and we mean that, because it is all about the patients," he said.

This year, the hospital also ranked in the top 10 in 15 different specialties.

One of the key things that continually keeps Johns Hopkins on top is research.  That research, done at the School of Medicine, goes right into practice.

"They're able to take the discoveries they make in their labs, take them to the patients' bedsides very quickly," Stephenson said.

That's what keeps patients like Sharon Travis coming back.

"It's the best quality care, and I mean people come from all over to come to Johns Hopkins and I understand why," Travis said.

U.S. News and World Report has released its hospital honor roll every year since 1990.  That first year was the only year Hopkins didn't take the top spot; it was edged out by Mayo Clinic.

This year, Massachusetts General Hospital took second place.  Mayo Clinic fell to number three.
