Man Thrown From Jeep In Crash On Route 77

SMITHSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a man was in critical condition after being ejected from a Jeep on Route 77 in Smithsburg.

Maryland State Police say the man, Lonnie Rabbit of Cascade, was traveling eastbound when his Jeep crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck a guardrail near Appalachian Court early Sunday.

Police say Rabbit was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Meritus Hospital for treatment.

Authorities say several factors contributed to the crash, including speed, alcohol, using a cell phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

The accident shut down the roadway for about three hours.
