BLOG: End Of Lockout Leads To Carnage At The Castle
As the NFL Lockout finally came to an end on Monday, it was back to the business of assembling a roster for the upcoming season and getting into a cap friendly situation. According to reports, the Baltimore Ravens will free up cap space by releasing WR Derrick Mason, TE Todd Heap, RB Willis McGahee and DT Kelly Gregg. By releasing the four veterans, Baltimore clears $18.6 million of cap room.
Everyone wanted football back, but Monday's news from Owings Mills reminded us of the harsh business side of the NFL. Mason and Heap are the two leading receivers in franchise history. Gregg has been a gritty, tough and inspirational performer for a defense that usually ranks among the league's best. McGahee, who had become a backup to Ray Rice, has scored 20 touchdowns for the Ravens over the last two seasons.
Various reports are saying the Ravens could bring a couple of the players back, but that remains to be seen. If, in fact, they have played their final game in a Baltimore uniform, I would like to thank them for being true professionals on and off the field and for providing us with plenty of exciting memories.
