Police Search For Driver In Fatal Hit-And-Run

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- New clues could lead to the driver who fatally struck a bicyclist, then drove away.

Meghan McCorkell reports Anne Arundel County Police are asking for your help.

A memorial marks the spot where Alex Canales Hernandez died.  He was riding his bike along Ritchie Highway near Bon Air Drive July 14 when a car hit him.

"You don't get out of a car, look at somebody dead on the ground, get in your car and then go away," said Hernandez's co-worker, Travis Snodgrass.

But police believe that's what the driver did.

Investigators have released a composite sketch of the woman they say was responsible.  She was wearing pink medical scrubs at the time of the crash.  Witnesses say she was behind the wheel of a dark-colored Ford Escape or Jeep Liberty.

"He never missed a day.  He never missed a minute.  He was here an hour before and 20 minutes after," Snodgrass said.

Hernandez used his bike to get to work and he wasn't the only cyclist struck that morning.  Just three miles away at Crain Highway and Georgia Avenue, Marco Garcia, 41, was hit.  That driver fled, too.  Now police are sounding the  alarm, warning everyone to pay attention.

"It's certainly one of those messages we want to get out to folks.  Share the road with each other," said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County Police.

Biking advocates say roads that don't have a shoulder---like Ritchie Highway---can be treacherous.

"It's so easy for a car to just cut you off because they're not thinking of you," said biker Penny Troutner.

Now police just hope they find the woman to give Hernandez's family some peace.

Hernandez was helping his girlfriend take care of two young children.  He'd been working at that car wash for a year and a half.

Anyone who recognizes the woman from that composite sketch is asked to call police right away.
