Kayaker Bitten By Copperhead Snake

HANCOCK, Md. (AP) -- Volunteer fire officials say a kayaker on the Potomac River was bitten by a copperhead snake.

A spokesman for the Hancock Volunteer Fire Co. tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown that rescuers were called about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. The kayaker said he was bitten after he took a break along the river near Berm Road.

The kayaker was flown to Meritus Medical Center, which has anti-venom serum.

Copperheads and rattlesnakes are common along the Potomac River in the Hancock area.
