Smoke From Virginia Swamp Fire Reaches Md.
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A major swamp fire in Virginia is sending clouds of smoke our way.
The fire in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in Suffolk has been burning for more than a week. The wind has carried the smoke from the fire north, finally reaching Baltimore and Anne Arundel County Saturday.
Fire officials say they've never seen anything like this in Maryland.
"It's extremely unusual," said Capt. James Rostek of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. "I cannot remember in the history of the department of having a fire hundreds of miles away affect us in Anne Arundel County."
Authorities are now warning people with respiratory illnesses to stay inside until conditions improve.
