Volvo Getting $19M From DOE's SuperTruck Program

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Swedish truck maker Volvo AB says it's getting $19 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to help develop more fuel-efficient tractor-trailers.

The company said Monday that the work will be done at its Hagerstown, Md., powertrain assembly plant, and Greensboro, N.C., home to Volvo's technology unit and Mack Trucks brand.

The five-year project is part of a SuperTruck initiative the DOE announced last year aimed at improving heavy-duty truck fuel efficiency by 50 percent.

Volvo competitors Daimler, Cummins and Navistar are the lead recipients of grant funding. The government announced in January 2010 that each of those companies would get nearly $40 million from the program.
