Infected Western Md. Animal Shelter Reopening
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Allegany County officials say they're preparing to reopen the county's animal shelter two months after a disease-related shutdown.
Emergency Management Division Chief Dick DeVore told the Cumberland Times-News Monday that operations should return to normal by the end of the week.
Officials say more than 50 cats and one dog either died or had to be euthanized after coming down with a virus.
DeVore says the shelter has an abundance of animals to adopt out or transfer to rescue organizations.
The shelter adopted a no-kill policy for healthy animals last year.
