Md. Crime Lab Earns High-Level Accreditation

PIKESVILLE, Md. (AP) -- An international crime lab organization is awarding the Maryland State Police's forensic division its highest level of accreditation.

The state police lab is the first full-service, nonfederal crime lab in Maryland to receive this level of certification from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board.

Officials marked the achievement Wednesday at a ceremony at the lab in Pikesville.

The Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division Laboratory accepts casework from any law enforcement agency in the state. It houses the state's DNA database and is an access point to the national Combined DNA Index System. Last year, the lab received evidence from almost 19,000 criminal cases, with about 68 percent of the requests for analysis coming from local law enforcement agencies.
