Severe Weather Causes Power Outages, Damage Across Md.
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Many people around the state are now coping with the severe weather.
Derek Valcourt reports on the trouble Sunday's powerful storms caused.
They provided plenty of cleanup work for area tree trimmers.
Dark clouds rolled through in the afternoon bringing lightning and heavy rain. With the ground already saturated, it didn't take long to overwhelm streams, storm drains and many roads.
Flash flooding shut down several streets, from Baltimore up to Philadelphia, stranding drivers who tried to make it through the standing water.
"My car just stopped," said Brandon Rocha, a stranded driver. "I drove through a puddle. There's no way around it."
Flash flooding is not the only problem. Strong winds toppled several trees on Baker Street in Northwest Baltimore.
Viola Bee says when the storm hit she and many of her neighbors rushed to the front doors to look outside.
"Just when I got there, I heard this cracking and this boom," Bee said. "I thought the world was coming to an end. So anyway, when we looked out, everybody came out, that tree had fallen."
Two cars were crushed below the massive trees, the owners devastated.
"I can chuckle now, but I'm still in shock," one car owner said. "I had my moment of tears. The tears are gone. Of course, there's nothing funny but you laugh to keep from crying."
Winds also took down a massive tree in Washington, D.C. and downed limbs throughout the Mid-Atlantic, knocking out power to nearly 44,000 BGE customers. BGE has had extra crews on hand all day and they promised to have more crews working into the night. There are still some 11,000 BGE customers in the dark.
